Subserviant Traveler
I have received a couple great suggestions for my trip, and have changed my route slightly as a result. Instead of cutting through east Tennessee, I’ll be going to Cade’s Cove (thanks Marsha) via Asheville instead. Thanks also to Jeff Greiner, VP- Marketing & Guest Service for Wildwater Rafting for setting me up with an outfitter on the Chattooga River. I understand the water is going to be low and that I might not get to see much huge whitewater because of the drought, but I’m craving a trip down the river anyway. Jeff also suggested that I stay in a Yurt! I don’t know what a Yurt is yet, but I’m looking forward to a new experience, so I’m trying to work in http://www.fallingwatersresort.com to stay in a Yurt.
I’m still looking for suggestions on where to stay in Hilton Head and Greenville, SC. I understand that Greenville has an event entitled “Downtown Alive”, (thanks Edward) so I plan on hanging out there and staying downtown. So, if you have suggestions for Greenville, I’m taking them also.
I have begun to pack. I have my “citizen journalist” gear ready to experiment in this new medium to me. I’m looking forward to an exciting trip.
Have an adventerous day!

Scott,
Me again – Mike and I stayed at the Crown Plaza when we went to a conference there a couple of years ago (www.cphiltonhead.com). I was quite impressed with the whole island. The island is still divided up into plantations and each plantation is owned by the decendants of the slaves. Quite an interesting history. The hotels actually lease the land from them and they are paid to work in the hotels. Stop and ask some of the elders while there. I found they love to tell their stories. The Crowne Plaza is actually in the “Shipyard Plantation.” I think there are only 14 plantations on the whole island (http://www.hiltonhead-sc.net/communities. No huge signs or billboards around. Very beautiful island. Hope this helps, and hope you enjoy.
A yurt is typically a round tent-like structure that is portable and used as shelter by migrating peoples, such as those in Mongolia. There are other versions of it used around the world. For more comfortable looking places try http://www.bentpage.wordpress.com. Thanks!
